Project Spect-Actor
A THEATRE OF THE OPPRESSED MOVEMENT FOR YOUTHS
January 2017: fearing that his students will not develop critical thinking skills and empathy, theatre practitioner and educator Andy Darrel Gomes introduced "Theatre of the Oppressed" into his classroom. The following months of experimentation convinced him on how the art form was an effective tool for discourse and problem solving.
The same year, Malaysia witnessed the death of 2 youths because of bullying. In response to the incident, a team consisting of campus students and industry practitioners came together to form Project Spect-Actor. The team performed their first public showcase in July .before embarking on a tour to schools and campuses across the Klang Valley to engage directly with youths, the demography most affected by bullying.

The Spect-Actors

Director, writer, actor and educator. Some of the notable projects include "My Ba's Radio" (2017) which screened at Short Shorts film festival Japan, "Bubbles" (2017) screened at Berkeley Community Centre USA, "Hawa" (2016) the grand prize winner of BMW Shorties 2016, "Tiga" (2016/17) supported by Five Arts Centre, Chiu Keng Guan's "Ola Bola' (2015) and Edmund Yeo's, "Aqerat" (2017).

Producer, actor, director, writer, and educator. She made her debut in "59 Minutes" (2006) by The Oral Stage. Since, she went on to work on a string of productions: "Bites of Delight" (2012) which won 2 Kakiseni Awards, "The Tailor Made Man" (2015) which won a Kakiseni Award and many more. Besides productions, she teaches speech and drama at various locations across the Klang valley through her company Sha's Fun House while juggling projects from Observers' Playground Produtions

Filmmaker. He was the first runner-up from the Hypp TV reality show “I Want to be a Filmmaker” and the grand prize winner of the Panasonic Digital Short Film Competition with his film “My Ba's Radio 爸的回想曲” (2017). The film had a special screening at Short Shorts Film Festival Asia and worldwide, an Academy Award accredited film festival in Japan.

Dancer. He studied the contemporary arts, majoring in dance at Sydney, Australia. During his time overseas, he was involved in numerous community productions Project Spect-Actor marks his first showcase in the Malaysian performing arts scene.

Thespian and singer. One of his earliest roles was in "Hamlet", playing King Claudius in a production by University Sains Malaysia (USM). His recent reincarnations are the various characters in "Syok Sendiri" a comedy series which ran at PenangPac. He too directs an writes actively for the stage.

Student and actor. Aaron is an 18 year old with an interesting story. He lost his father during his high school days and to pay for tuition fees, he started The BoonArt: a string art collection on Carousell. A few months after SPM, he interned with Passion Portraits: a video production company who celebrates passionate individuals and was involved in documenting numerous personalities in the country. He is currently a full scholarship recipient to study Mass Communication at KDU.

Actress and student. She was recently bitten by the acting bug and went on a pursuit to learn the craft, starting with a 10 week beginners' acting course at KLPAC under renowned actor/ acting coach Qahar Aqilah. It was her tenacity to learn that captured the attention of the team at Project Spect-Actor, thus invited to be a part of the initiative. Elsie is a full scholarship recipient, currently studying business at Taylors College.

Filmmaker. His debut short film "The Boy who Rocked the World" (2013) won numerous awards at BMW shorties, Malaysian Digital Film Awards and the Grand Prize of Astro Sundance Short film competition. He is also an alumni of the Fantastic Film School, a mentorship program under established filmmakers at Bucheon International Film Festival.

filmmaker and student. His works during his diploma years: "A Clocktower Conspiracy" and "Silent Killer" won best documentary and best PSA at USM's International Creative Visual Awards and UNIMAS' Mini Film Festival respectively. He also starred in the short film "Bubbles" opposite renowned actress Anne James. Steven is currently pursuing a degree in digital filmmaking at Sunway University while freelancing in the industry. His latest directorial work is Battle Bloom's music video, "The Fight"

Student, singer and educator. She is a part of "AC" (Assorted Acapella), a singing band and performs regularly at Unplugged events. She is actively involved in community/ education causes: volunteering for Refuge For The Refugees' Saturday School and as a teacher to guide students in Tamil Schools for their UPSR preparations. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Education at Segi College.
